Working at the Mart

Taking a break from my normal nerdy-ness has been an interesting experience. I’ve learned that I can work nights, at least for a short stretch. I have quite enjoyed the combination of physical labor and mental tasks. That probably helped with staying awake.

Another fun challenge was figuring out the organizational system and using that knowledge to solve problems, such as not enough room on the shelf for 3 sets of products to each go 8 wide. As a programmer, I imagine it can be quite challenging to account for variations when figuring out fit (though I’ve not tried to program such a system). Back to the physical world, having a good sense of space came in quite handy to fit things in.

Agility, combined with core balance can also be handy for what we were doing with moving product around. For example, moving a short box holding 6 bottles from one shelf to another.

It was also nice to have a clear(ish) cut between work and life. Work/life balance can be a bit of a challenge programming from home. Sometimes work spills into life and sometimes life spills into work. I think sometimes that flexibility can be a good thing. You have to set and sometimes enforce boundaries, but know when to break them.
